Choose Tenerife if you want the widest choice of resorts, the most flights and a classic sunny promenade lifestyle. Choose Gran Canaria if you want a real city with a beach, a strong remote work scene and the sunniest resorts in the south. Both have mild winters and good healthcare; the difference is lifestyle.

Side by side
| Tenerife | Gran Canaria | |
|---|---|---|
| Sunniest base | Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje | Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, Mogán |
| City life | Santa Cruz, La Laguna | Las Palmas (much bigger, beach in town) |
| Greener, cheaper side | The north (Puerto de la Cruz) | The north and centre |
| Remote work scene | Growing (El Médano, south) | Strong (Las Palmas) |
| Without a car | Easy in the main towns | Easy in Las Palmas and the south coast |
| Flights from the UK | Two airports, many routes | One busy airport, many routes |
Weather
Both islands have similar winter temperatures at the coast. Each has a sunny south and a cloudier north. The key practical difference: in Gran Canaria the main city sits in the cloudier north-east, while in Tenerife the main resorts sit in the sunny south.
Cost
Rents in the busiest southern resorts of both islands are similar and rise in peak winter. Las Palmas usually offers better value for a three-month rental and much cheaper eating out. Puerto de la Cruz plays the same role in Tenerife. See our cost of living guides.
Lifestyle
Tenerife’s south feels international and relaxed, built around promenades, beaches and cafés. Las Palmas feels Spanish and urban, with markets, theatres and a busy beach promenade used by locals every day.
Pros and cons
Tenerife pros: more resort choice, Teide, two airports, easy for first-timers. Cons: southern resorts can feel touristy; the north is cooler.
Gran Canaria pros: a real city by the sea, great for remote workers, very sunny south. Cons: Las Palmas mornings can be grey; the southern resorts are spread out.
Our verdict
If you want a sunny, easy winter by the sea, pick southern Tenerife. If you want to feel you are living somewhere, pick Las Palmas, and spend some weeks in the south for sun. Read the full guides to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
