What to expect day to day
Most days are sunny and pleasant for walking, cycling and eating outdoors. Occasional Atlantic fronts bring a day or two of rain, mostly in the north and the mountains. Calima episodes can make the air hazy and warmer.
Mountains
The centre of the island, around Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves, can be cold in winter, with frost on clear nights and very occasional snow. Take a warm layer for hiking.
Carnival
The Las Palmas carnival usually runs in February and March and is one of the island’s biggest events. Maspalomas has its own carnival too.
Our verdict
January and February are excellent for active days outside. If you want maximum warmth, base yourself in Puerto Rico, Mogán or Arguineguín. More in the Gran Canaria guide.
