Playa Blanca, Lanzarote for a Long Winter Stay: Calm, Sun and Papagayo

Playa Blanca, at the southern tip of Lanzarote, is the island’s calmest resort and often its sunniest. It has a long seafront promenade, a smart marina, easy access to the beautiful Papagayo beaches and a ferry port with crossings to Fuerteventura. For a long winter stay it offers peace, sunshine and sea views, but it is more spread out and quieter than Puerto del Carmen, and it is further from the airport and the capital.

Why long-stayers choose Playa Blanca

The promenade runs for several kilometres along the coast, from the Marina Rubicón area through the old centre and on towards the lighthouse of Pechiguera, with views across the strait to Fuerteventura and the islet of Lobos. The town beaches are small and calm, and the Papagayo coves, inside a protected natural area to the east, are some of the most beautiful beaches in the Canaries.

Playa Blanca is sheltered from the worst of the trade winds by the hills of Los Ajaches, so it is often the calmest and sunniest corner of Lanzarote. The atmosphere is relaxed and residential, with low-rise villas and apartment complexes.

Where to live in Playa Blanca

  • The old centre and seafront: walkable, with shops and restaurants; the most practical choice without a car.
  • Around Marina Rubicón: attractive and upmarket, close to the marina market and the Papagayo side.
  • Towards the lighthouse: quieter and often good value, but further from the centre.
  • Inland developments: larger villas and complexes, usually need a car.

Daily life

Shopping: several supermarkets and shops in town; for bigger stores, Arrecife is about 35 minutes away.

Health: a public health centre, pharmacies and private clinics in town; the island’s main hospital is in Arrecife. See what to do in a medical emergency in the Canary Islands.

Eating out: restaurants along the seafront and in the marina, from simple cafes to fish restaurants.

Activities: walking the promenade, the beaches of Papagayo, the market at Marina Rubicón, boat trips and day trips to Fuerteventura by ferry.

Getting around

Buses connect Playa Blanca with Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen and the airport, but less frequently than in the busier resorts. Ferries cross to Corralejo in Fuerteventura in about half an hour. You can manage without a car if you live in the centre, but many long-stayers hire one for part of their stay to explore Timanfaya and the north. See monthly car hire in the Canary Islands.

Weather through the winter

Expect about 24°C in November, 22°C in December, 21°C in January and February, and 23°C in March, with very little rain. Playa Blanca is usually a little sunnier and less windy than the north of the island.

Who Playa Blanca suits

Playa Blanca suits couples and retirees who want calm, sunshine and beautiful beaches more than nightlife or big-town services. If you want more life, a longer flat promenade and easier buses, choose Puerto del Carmen. Compare all options in wintering in Lanzarote: the best towns.
