Puerto de Mogán for a Long Winter Stay: Little Venice in the Sun

Puerto de Mogán is the prettiest harbour town in Gran Canaria and one of the sunniest places on the island. Its white houses with colourful trim, bougainvillea and small canals have earned it the nickname Little Venice. For a long winter stay it offers beauty, calm and excellent weather, but it is small, popular and expensive, with fewer apartments than the bigger resorts.

Why people fall for Puerto de Mogán

The old fishing harbour and the marina sit side by side, with low white buildings, flowers and footbridges over small canals. There is a sheltered sandy beach, a promenade with cafes and fish restaurants, and dramatic mountains behind. During the day it fills with visitors, especially on Fridays, when the weekly market takes over the streets. In the evening it becomes peaceful again.

The valley behind the harbour is protected from the trade winds, so sunshine is very reliable. It is a wonderful place to spend a winter if you do not need a big town around you.

The downsides to know

  • Few apartments and high demand: book well in advance for December to March.
  • Prices: rents and restaurants are among the highest in Gran Canaria.
  • Small: there is one main supermarket area and limited shopping; bigger stores are in Arguineguín.
  • Distance: it is at the end of the coast road, about 45 to 55 minutes from the airport.
  • Slopes: the harbour is flat, but many homes are on the valley sides.

Daily life

Shopping: small supermarkets and shops; for larger shopping, take the bus to Arguineguín or further.

Health: a pharmacy and medical services locally, more clinics in Arguineguín and Puerto Rico, and the main hospitals in Las Palmas. See what to do in a medical emergency in the Canary Islands.

Eating out: fish restaurants by the harbour and cafes along the promenade.

Activities: boat trips, the Friday market, walks along the coast and into the Mogán valley, and day trips into the mountains.

Getting around

Global buses connect Puerto de Mogán with Puerto Rico, Arguineguín, Playa del Inglés and Las Palmas. In season, tourist boats run along the coast to Puerto Rico and Arguineguín, a lovely way to travel. You can live without a car, but a hire car is useful for shopping trips and exploring. See monthly car hire in the Canary Islands.

Weather through the winter

Puerto de Mogán is usually a degree or two warmer and sunnier than the airport readings in our monthly guides. Expect about 24 to 26°C in November, 22 to 23°C in December and around 21 to 22°C in January and February, with very little rain.
