Most winter visitors do not need an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero). You need one for financial and legal transactions in Spain, such as buying property, buying a car, opening some bank accounts, signing employment contracts or registering as self-employed. For a three-month rental, your passport is usually enough.

When you need an NIE
- Buying or selling property.
- Buying a car.
- Some bank accounts and long-term contracts.
- Working or becoming self-employed.
- Applying for residency (you receive it as part of the process).
When you usually do not
- A seasonal rental for a winter.
- Opening a phone contract with a prepaid SIM.
- Everyday shopping and travel.
How to get one as a non-resident
- Apply at a Spanish consulate in your country, or in Spain at a police station that handles foreigners’ procedures (appointment required).
- Complete form EX-15.
- Pay the fee (form 790, code 012).
- Show your passport and a reason for needing the NIE.
Appointments in the Canaries can be hard to get in winter; some people use a gestoría.
Our verdict
Get an NIE only if you are buying something significant or moving to Spain.
