Most winter visitors do not need a Spanish bank account. A UK fee-free card and a multi-currency account cover rent, shopping and cash. A Spanish account becomes useful if you stay every year, pay local direct debits or become resident.

When you do not need one
- Stays of up to three months under the 90/180 rule.
- Rent paid by international transfer to the landlord’s IBAN.
- Everyday spending by card.
When it helps
- You own or rent long term and pay utilities by direct debit.
- You return every winter and want a local account.
- You are becoming resident.
Non-resident accounts
Spanish banks offer accounts for non-residents. They usually ask for your passport, proof of address abroad and sometimes an NIE or a non-resident certificate. Fees are often higher than for resident accounts, so compare carefully.

Our verdict
For most winter visitors, a euro IBAN from a multi-currency account is enough. See Best Way to Send Money from the UK to Spain.
