Do You Need to Register (Empadronamiento) for a Long Stay?

If you are a visitor staying under the 90/180 rule, you generally do not need to register on the padrón (empadronamiento) for a winter stay. Registering becomes important when you move to Spain, apply for residency or need access to resident services.

What empadronamiento is

The padrón is the municipal register of people living in each town. Registering gives you a certificate (certificado de empadronamiento) used for many procedures, such as residency applications, public healthcare registration as a resident, schooling and some local discounts.

When it matters

  • You are applying for a non-lucrative or digital nomad visa residence card.
  • You are becoming a Spanish resident.
  • You want to register children at school.
  • You need proof of address for official procedures.

When it usually does not

  • A winter of up to 90 days as a tourist.
  • Short-term holiday rentals.

How to register

  1. Book an appointment at your town hall (ayuntamiento), often online.
  2. Bring your passport, your rental contract or deeds, and the town hall’s form.
  3. Some councils ask for extra documents; check locally.

Be careful

Registering on the padrón can be one of the factors used to show you live in Spain, which matters for tax residency. Take advice if you are not planning to become resident.

Our verdict

For a normal winter stay, you can skip it. If you are moving to the Canaries, it is one of the first steps.
