Internet Speeds in the Canary Islands: Fibre, 5G and Rentals

Internet in the Canary Islands is generally good in towns and resorts: most apartments in Las Palmas, Santa Cruz and the main southern resorts have fibre, and 4G and 5G mobile coverage is strong along the coasts. Rural areas and some older buildings can be slower, so always check before you book.

What to expect

ConnectionWhereTypical experience
FibreCities and most resortsFast and stable for video calls
4G and 5G mobileCoasts and townsGood backup or hotspot
Older ADSL or shared wifiSome complexes and rural areasCan be slow at peak times

How to check a rental

  1. Ask the landlord for a recent speed test screenshot showing upload and download.
  2. Ask whether the connection is fibre and whether the router is in the apartment.
  3. For shared wifi in large complexes, ask how many units share it.

Backup options

  • A local prepaid SIM or eSIM with a generous data allowance.
  • A portable 4G or 5G router.
  • A coworking membership for important calls.

Our verdict

Fibre is common, but never assume it. See Best eSIM and SIM Cards for a Long Stay.
