Bringing Your Pet for a Winter in the Canary Islands

You can bring your dog or cat from the UK to the Canary Islands for the winter if it is microchipped, vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel and has an Animal Health Certificate issued by an official vet within 10 days of travel. Coming back to Great Britain, dogs need a tapeworm treatment before the return journey.

Requirements to enter Spain from the UK

  1. Microchip fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination.
  2. Rabies vaccination, with the primary vaccination at least 21 days before travel.
  3. Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from an official vet, issued no more than 10 days before you arrive in the EU.
  4. Enter through a designated travellers’ point of entry.

Returning to Great Britain

  • Dogs need a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 1 and 5 days before arriving in Great Britain.
  • Use an approved route and carrier.
  • If you have an EU pet passport issued in the EU, you may be able to use it for return trips.

Getting there

Few airlines carry pets in the cabin on Canary Islands routes, and many restrict snub-nosed breeds in the hold. Some owners travel by car and ferry from mainland Spain.

Renting with a pet

Many winter rentals do not accept pets. Filter for pet-friendly listings and expect a higher deposit.

Health in the Canaries

  • Protect dogs from heat and hot pavements.
  • Ask a local vet about parasite prevention, including leishmaniasis risk in parts of Spain.
  • Keep dogs on a lead and check beach rules.
