February in Tenerife is mild rather than hot: about 21-22°C during the day in the south, and the sea is at its coolest of the year at around 19°C. Plenty of people swim, but it feels fresh, especially on windy days.

Is it warm enough to swim?
It depends on you. Many northern Europeans swim every day in February; for others, 19°C is too cold without a wetsuit. Sheltered beaches such as Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos and Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje feel the most comfortable. Heated pools in apartment complexes are another option.

Carnival
February often brings the Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnival, one of the biggest in the world, depending on the year’s calendar. Accommodation in Santa Cruz fills up, and the streets are busy at night.
Calima
Late winter can bring calima, when dust from the Sahara makes the air hazy and warm. It usually lasts a day or two. See Calima in the Canary Islands.
What to pack
- Swimwear and a light wetsuit if you feel the cold.
- Layers for the evenings.
- A windproof jacket.
Our verdict
February is a lovely month for walking and outdoor life in Tenerife. For swimming, choose sheltered beaches or a heated pool. More in the Tenerife guide.
