Los Cristianos for a Long Winter Stay: The Complete Guide

Los Cristianos is the most popular base in Tenerife for long winter stays, and for good reason. It is sunny, mostly flat and compact, with a real town centre, a sheltered beach and every service you need within walking distance. It is busy and rents are not cheap, but few places in the Canaries make daily life as easy for a stay of two to four months.

Why it works so well for long stays

Los Cristianos started as a fishing village and still has a working port and a town centre with plazas, a church, banks and local shops. The seafront promenade runs almost entirely on the flat from Playa de las Vistas through Playa de las Américas to Costa Adeje, so you can walk for an hour or more every day without a hill.

The two town beaches are sheltered by breakwaters and calm most of the winter. Playa de las Vistas, with its golden sand, is the main one; the smaller Playa de Los Cristianos sits next to the harbour.

Where to live in Los Cristianos

  • Seafront and the streets just behind it: the most convenient, closest to the beaches and shops, but the most expensive and sometimes noisy.
  • The old town centre: lively, with local bars and shops, and usually a little cheaper.
  • Up the hill towards the motorway: quieter and cheaper, with better views, but a steeper walk back from the seafront.
  • Towards Las Américas: more nightlife; choose carefully if you want quiet evenings.

Tip: a street or two back from the promenade often gives the best balance of price, quiet and convenience. Read how to find a monthly rental in Tenerife.

Daily life

  • Shopping: several supermarkets, a Sunday market and plenty of small shops.
  • Health: a public health centre in town, many private clinics with English-speaking staff, and the Hospital Universitario del Sur nearby. See English-speaking doctors and clinics in Tenerife.
  • Eating out: everything from a cheap menu del día to seafront restaurants. See eating out prices in Tenerife.
  • Activities: walking up Montaña de Guaza for views, boat trips, clubs and groups run by and for long-stay visitors.

Getting around

The TITSA bus station connects Los Cristianos with the airport, Costa Adeje, Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and the rest of the island. A bus pass makes regular trips cheap; see the Tenerife bus pass for long stays. Ferries from the port reach La Gomera in about an hour, perfect for day trips. You do not need a car to live here, though you may want one for a week to explore Teide and the north. See do you need a car for a winter in Tenerife?

Weather through the winter

The south of Tenerife is one of the sunniest places in Europe in winter. Expect about 25°C in November, 23°C in December, 21 to 22°C in January and February, and 23°C in March, with very little rain. The sea ranges from about 22°C in November to 19°C in February and March.
