What February weather feels like

Temperatures in February are almost the same as in January, but the days are longer and brighter. Sunrise is around 7:30 and sunset close to 18:50, so you get more of the warm afternoon. Many long-stayers find February the most comfortable month for walking and cycling: warm in the sun, never hot.

The breeze is usually moderate. February can bring a calima episode, with hazy skies and unusually warm, dry air for a day or two, and occasionally a cold, showery spell from the north-west. Both pass quickly.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in February?

The Atlantic around the Canaries is at its coolest in February and March, at about 18 to 19°C. Swimming is perfectly possible, and you will see plenty of people in the water at Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen, but most visitors find it bracing. Choose a calm, sunny afternoon or use a heated pool. Surfers and bodyboarders on the west coast wear wetsuits.

Carnival in February

Carnival is the biggest party of the Canarian winter. Arrecife and the other towns hold parades, costume contests and street parties, usually in February and sometimes running into March, depending on the date of Easter. Dates change every year, so check the local town hall’s programme before you plan trips around it.
