The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. At Canary Islands airports, UK and other non-EU visitors are registered with their passport details, fingerprints and a facial image the first time they enter, and every entry and exit is then recorded digitally.

What happens on arrival
- At passport control, use a self-service kiosk if available, or go to a border officer.
- Scan your passport, have your face photographed and give your fingerprints.
- The officer may ask about the purpose and length of your stay, your accommodation and your funds.
- On later trips, you are checked against your existing record.
Who it applies to
EES applies to non-EU citizens travelling for a short stay, including UK citizens. It does not apply to EU citizens or to people holding a Spanish residence card.
What it means for long-stay visitors
- No more stamps: your days are counted automatically.
- Overstays are visible: border officers see your remaining days instantly.
- Plan your dates: check your 90/180 position before booking flights.
Tips
- Allow extra time at the airport for your first EES registration.
- Carry proof of accommodation and return travel.
- Keep your passport valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Schengen.
Our verdict
EES does not change the rules, but it enforces them perfectly. Read 90/180 Rule for UK Citizens to count your days.
