In December, the sun in Gran Canaria is in the south: Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico and Mogán typically reach 22-23°C with lots of sunshine, while Las Palmas in the north-east is a degree or two cooler and more often cloudy, especially in the mornings.

Rounded long-term averages.
Why Las Palmas is cloudier
The trade winds push low cloud against the north-east of the island, the so-called *panza de burro*. The central mountains block it from reaching the south. On a grey Las Palmas morning, the south is often bright and sunny.
Christmas and New Year
December is a festive month: Las Palmas has lights, markets and a famous sand nativity scene on Las Canteras beach. Prices for accommodation in the south rise over Christmas and New Year, so book early.
What to pack
- Summer clothes for the south.
- A light jacket for evenings and for Las Palmas.
- Walking shoes for the dunes and mountains.
