Fuerteventura is the Canary Island of endless beaches, open space and quiet. It is the windiest of the main islands and the least developed, which makes it wonderful for walkers, beach lovers and watersports fans, and a little too quiet for some long-stayers. This guide helps you decide whether it suits your winter.

Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste or the south?
- Corralejo: the liveliest base in the north, with dunes, beaches, restaurants and a ferry to Lanzarote.
- Caleta de Fuste: a calm, sheltered bay close to the airport, popular with older long-stayers.
- Morro Jable and Costa Calma (south): huge beaches and good sunshine, but far from everything else.
- Puerto del Rosario: the capital, practical and cheaper, though not pretty.
Weather and how windy it really gets
Winter is sunny and dry, but the trade winds can blow for days at a time. That is great for surfing and kitesurfing and less great for sunbathing on an exposed beach. Sheltered spots and windbreaks make a big difference, and Caleta de Fuste is often calmer than the north and west. See our Fuerteventura winter weather guide.
Finding a monthly rental
Rentals are concentrated in Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and the south. Supply is smaller than on Tenerife or Gran Canaria, so search early and be flexible about the exact town. Read our rental guides.
What a winter costs
Rents are often lower than in the most popular resorts on the bigger islands, but choice is smaller and you may need a car more often, which adds to the budget. See our cost of living guides.
Getting around without a car
Buses link the main towns and the airport, but they are less frequent than on the bigger islands. If you stay in Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste you can manage day to day; for exploring, plan some car hire. More in our island life guides.
Healthcare and insurance
The island’s general hospital is in Puerto del Rosario, with health centres in the resorts and some private clinics. Carry your GHIC and long-stay travel insurance. See our health and insurance guides.
Your Fuerteventura winter checklist
- Be honest about how much quiet you want.
- Choose a sheltered base if wind bothers you.
- Budget for some car hire.
- Book early: the rental market is small.
- Check your 90/180 days and insurance.
