Getting Prescriptions Filled in the Canary Islands

UK prescriptions are not normally dispensed directly in Spain. If you need a prescription-only medicine during your stay, you will usually need a prescription from a doctor in Spain, either at a public health centre or a private clinic. The easiest solution is to bring enough medication for your whole stay.

Before you travel

  1. Ask your GP for enough medication for your whole stay, if possible.
  2. Carry a letter or printed prescription listing generic names and doses.
  3. Keep medicines in original packaging in your hand luggage.
  4. Check rules for controlled medicines, which may need extra documents.

If you run out

  • Visit a pharmacy first: pharmacists can advise and some medicines are available without prescription in Spain.
  • For prescription-only medicines, see a doctor at a private clinic or, if eligible, a public health centre.
  • Bring your UK prescription or medication box to show the generic name.

Pharmacies

Look for the green cross. Pharmacies take turns to stay open at night and on holidays (farmacia de guardia); the rota is posted on every pharmacy door.

Costs

Prices for many common medicines are often lower than private UK prices. With a GHIC, prescriptions from the public system may involve a co-payment.
