La Palma for Slow Travel: A Winter Base Guide

La Palma is one of the most beautiful islands for slow travel in winter: green forests, dramatic volcanoes, dark-sky stargazing and very few tourists. It is not a beach-and-sun destination, and you will need a car, but for walkers and nature lovers it is outstanding.

Where to base yourself

  • Los Llanos de Aridane: the main town on the sunnier west side, with shops and services.
  • Tazacorte: a small port with a beach and the sunniest weather on the island.
  • Santa Cruz de La Palma: the capital on the east, elegant but cloudier.

Winter weather

La Palma is greener because it gets more rain, especially in the north and east. The west side around Los Llanos and Tazacorte is drier and sunnier. Expect mild days and cool evenings.

What to do

  • Hike the Caldera de Taburiente national park and the volcano route.
  • Visit the landscapes left by the 2021 Tajogaite eruption, following official access rules.
  • Stargaze: the island protects its night sky and hosts major observatories.

Practical points

TopicWhat to expect
CarEssential for most stays
RentalsSmaller market; book early
HealthcareHospital in the east, health centres across the island
Getting thereFlights via Tenerife or Gran Canaria, some direct seasonal flights

Our verdict

Choose La Palma for a second or third winter in the Canaries, when you want nature and calm more than beaches.
